Why Black Women Should Stop Being Responsible | Montina Myers Galloway | TEDxUNCCharlotte

NOTE FROM TED: The relationship between parentification and memory loss requires further research. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf

Adults in the U.S. perceive that Black girls need less nurturing, protecting, and support (as reported by the Georgetown Law Center on Poverty and Inequality). This perception, combined with societal and economic pressures, can lead to Black girls becoming parentified– being a parent to your parent. Montina Myers-Galloway examines the causes and impacts of parentification and advocates why Black women should stop being responsible. Montina Myers-Galloway is an energetic and altruistic therapist who is passionate about healthy relationships and self development. Originally from South Carolina, Montina has lived In Charlotte for over 10 years. Montina is a licensed clinical mental health counselor and a National Certified Counselor. Montina's speciality is working with Black women who were forced to grow up too soon, an experience she has navigated herself. Outside of work, Montina enjoys spending time with her family, finding creative recipes, and blasting gospel music in her car. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
