Rendering With Procreate: A Simple Rendering Exercise Anyone Can Do
Rendering With Procreate (Novice Level) | Episode 1 of 10 “A Simple Rendering Exercise Anyone Can Do” • To see next episode click here: https://youtu.be/Otta1E_uuuE
Follow along in real-time as architect and professional renderer James Akers demonstrates a process for designing and rendering a small living room. James shares the menu of Procreate brushes he uses, how he visualizes the design and final rendering beginning with a very rough sketch, and the Procreates tips and techniques he uses to gradually refine the rough sketch into a professional-looking interior rendering complete with shade and shadow.

Time stamps as follows:
0:00 Intro
0:29 My custom brush menu including Procreate brushes for drawing, vegetation, lighting and texture
1:15. Using the Flat Brush for design thinking out loud and establishing the composition
1:54. Finding the "implied" vanishing point of your sketch
2:26. Estimating sizes aka "scaling" your furniture and people relative to the horizon line and vanishing point
2:49 Keeping the vanishing point in mind as you sketch
3:44. How and why I use the Technical Pen brush as my #2 pencil
4:23. Adding definition to the sketch with the Technical Pen and loose freehand line work
6:16. Using a new layer of translucent white as a substitute for tracing paper
6:32. Using the Drawing Guide in Perspective Assist mode to begin drafting the final rendering and adding detail to the room design and fruniture
6:45 Tapping and dragging the cursor to locate the vanishing point in Perspective Assist
8:19. Adding a second vanishing point to make your rendering more dynamic
13:18. Using the Circle Brush to add an elliptical-shaped George Nelson pendant light above the coffee table
14:37. Using the Flat Brush to add tone to the basic line drawing
16:13 Using the Flat Brush with Perspective Assist to add delightful "accidental" and gestural design details and character to your in-progress rendering
18:20 Plotting your room shadows based on whatever light source, sun angle and compass orientation you choose
19:13. Choosing a shadow path to define details and increase the sense of depth in your rendering
20:52 Rendering shadows by the "select and fill" method
22:15 Rendering and modulating shadows with the Soft Brush
24:15. Plotting the path and shape of the shadow that will feature your design in the best light
25:11 Demonstrating how shadows also obey the laws of perspective, but don't necessarily converge to the same vanishing point as the architecture of the room. Rather, they converge to the vanishing point determined by the source of light
30:31 Using the two-finger tap and expand gesture to enlarge the sketch on your screen and work more safely on small details
32:56. How the design of your shadow shape focuses the viewer's eye on the important part of your rendering
32:57. Adjusting the darkness of your shadow by using the "multiply" blend mode in the layer menu; layer transparency; and/or hue, saturation and brightness in the adjustment menu
34:59. Using the Soft Brush in eraser mode to lighten ambient parts of the room while maintaining maximum contrast at the edge of the shadow
37:47. Comparing the original extremely loose and "blobby" sketch to the refined final rendering
