M61 Vulcan: The Gun That Can Fire 6,000 Round Per Minute

The M61 Vulcan is a rotary cannon that uses 20 x 102 mm cartridges and is powered by hydraulics. It was originally designed to use linked ammunition, but later versions use a linkless feeding system. With a range of around 600 meters, the weapon fires rounds as the barrels rotate, allowing for a high rate of fire. It can shoot up to 100 rounds per second, or 6,000 rounds per minute, and is known for its reliability with a jam or failure rate of only one in every 10,000 rounds. To manage the high ammo consumption, a burst controller was added by General Electric to allow pilots to control the amount of rounds used. The gun also has been used as a defensive armament on military aircraft and has been installed in a variety of aircraft including the F-104 Starfighter, F-4 Phantom II, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and F/A-18 Hornet. The M61 may seem like a modern invention, but it was actually first developed by General Electric in the post-World War II era, and first deployed in 1956. However, the idea of using multiple barrels for a weapon dates back even further, over a century before the M61's creation.
