LU: The Waterloo & City line

Today’s video is a short film about the Waterloo & City line of the London Underground.

Merely connecting two stations, namely Waterloo station with Bank station in the City of London, the Waterloo & City line is the shortest line of the London Underground. The line opened in 1898 and is the second-oldest underground line in London. However, for most of the time it was owned and operated by mainline railway companies, most recently by British Rail. It is only in 1994 when its operation were transferred to London Underground.

The main purpose of the line is to take commuters from the busy Waterloo railway station into the financial district of the city. As such, it only operates on weekdays and Saturdays, and it is closed on Sundays.

The film starts at Waterloo station, where trains turn around via the small maintenance yard of the line. We then take a 1992 Tube stock train towards Bank station.

Enjoy!

Filmed on 28 October, 2015.
