London Transport at Highbury & Islington
Today we are at Highbury & Islington station in north London. It is a major interchange station in the London Borough of Islington, serving the London Underground Victoria line, the London Overground North London and East London lines, as well as the Northern City line, which belongs to National Rail and sees services operated by Great Northern.
The station has eight platforms, of which four are underground and served by the Victoria and Northern City lines. The remaining four platforms are above ground and are served by the Overground.
The London Underground Victoria line runs between Walthamstow Central and Brixton, runs fully automated, and uses modern 2009 Tube stock.
The platforms of the Northern City line are right adjacent to the Underground platforms. Trains on this line use older Class 313 stock. Particularly interesting is the Network South East branding from former British Rail times, which is still visible all over the station.
Finnally, the Overground has two lines at this station. The East London line, which runs to New Cross and Croydon has its western Terminus here. Trains on the East London line run on DC traction current supplied via third rail. The North London line runs between Richmond in the west and Stratford in the east and trains use overhead line equipment supplying AC traction current. All London Overground trains here are formed of Class 378 “Capitalstar” stock.
Enjoy!
