ATV aFrame First Impressions
The aFrame is one of the most unique electronic percussion instruments I’ve played. The frame is made of bamboo, and the playing surface is a high tech plastic. It’s a grey semi translucent polycarbonate plate. It textured on the front giving it this almost rubbery feel. If all that sounds very toyish, it’s definitely not. It feels good to play, it feels and responds like a percussion instrument. You can play it in a lot of different ways. I just played it on my knee, but you can set it on the floor playing it like a cajon, or put it on a stand via the built in mount to play it like a djembe. The aFrame uses 2 piezos and a pressure sensor. It’s very sensitive across the entire surface. It picks up light hits and the really hard. You can even rub your hand across the surface, which was really cool. The pad even picks up when you play on the bamboo frame.
Now I immediately asked if this used samples, and it doesn't. This is really a synth at heart, with many layers and you can customize the heck out of it. Using the DSP engine, you have control over 40 tones. A tone is actually more complicated that you might think. There are four sections to each sound:
Main: Parametric Band-Pass Filters
Sub Timbre: Parametric Band-Pass Filters
Extra Timbre: Added noise (click/white noise/tones)
Dry Timbre: Acoustic miked sound of the aFrame
All four sections get passed through effects, effects can be controlled in real time though pressure, and you can also mute the sounds through pressure. The only thing I really don’t like is the price, It’s $1600. Part of the reason for that is probably the fact that the bamboo frame is put together by hand, and this is a specialty instrument. Buy you can’t just to to Walmart and buy something just as good for half the price, the closest thing to this is the Korg Wavedrum, and even that isn’t the same thing. Anyway, it's a great product, and really fun to play. Hope the review helps!
