Global National: April 8, 2021 | Frustration in 3rd COVID-19 wave amid rising cases, vaccine rollout
In tonight’s top story: David Akin reports on Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout and why more is not being done to close the gap between vaccine delivery and administration of doses.
Alberta now has the most COVID-19 cases per capita in Canada and many doctors say new restrictions won’t be enough to flatten the curve. As Heather Yourex-West explains, Premier Jason Kenney is facing a revolt from members within his own party critical of his latest public health measures.
The Quebec City region is also dealing with a major spike linked to new COVID-19 variants. Amanda Jelowicki reports on an outbreak at a gym that led to more than 400 cases.
In Ontario, an expert group of scientists that is advising the province on the pandemic is recommending doctors ration doses of a drug used to treat COVID-19 patients because of supply shortages. Eric Sorensen reports on the side effects of this drug decision.
And, authorities in Northern Ireland sought to restore calm following the worst mayhem in a week of street violence in the region, where Britain’s exit from the European Union has unsettled an uneasy political balance. Crystal Goomansingh has more.
Plus, as COVID-19 vaccination campaigns ramp up, there is also a push to create a vaccine that would provide protection from all coronaviruses. As Mike Le Couteur reports, researchers say we need to be ready for the next coronavirus outbreak.
