A beautiful, heartwarming turnout and magical sunrise for a sad, but joyful farewell to a Bondi Beach legend this morning.

Paddle outs are how we in the surf community honour our loved ones who move on to the next life. It's one of the most beautiful customs and traditions that I've ever had the pleasure to experience and be a part of. The last one I captured was for my mate Ash, who was killed in the Bondi Junction attacks a year ago...

I've got tears in my eyes as I write this, not because Dion and I were the closest of friends, but because I see the impact he made on people and the world around him, as he did with me.

I first met Dion back in 2011, when we put a 900 square metre ice rink on the sands of Bondi Beach together and he was one of the first blokes that I knew in this amazing seaside community that I'm blessed to now call home.

What I'll remember and treasure most about Dion Horstmans is our sunrise art and philosophy chats on Bondi Beach promenade in South Bondi next to Ramp 1, pre or post swim, and reflecting upon what our individual artistic pursuits mean to each of us, the learnings and the life lessons that we derive from it.

It actually hurts creating content like this and if I'm honest I almost decided to swim out the back this morning instead of filming with the drone, but I feel like this is my responsibility and a way to give back to Dion, his family and friends. It is the second paddle out in less than a year I've filmed for someone who made such an amazing impact on their community. Our community.

Thank you to longboard legends and artists Sully & @notnotcamscott for the beautiful art tribute that you've created in South Bondi that I'm hoping will live on forever. "F*ck Yeah!".
