NOTE: Dajos BÉLA (Leo Golzmann) – German conductor, violinist and jazz arranger of the Jewish / Russian/ Hungarian descent. Born in Kiev in 1897 he studied music in Moscow, later continuing studies in Berlin, where he started playing in local venues. In 1921 he established his own band, with which he made first recordings for Carl Lindström's company (brands: Odeon, Parlophon, Beka) under the nickname Sándor Józsi Tanz-Kapelle. The tumbling of the monarchies in Central Europe, left the cosmopolitan audience full of nostalgy for the lost imperial days therefore many Dajos Bela’s recordings of the time wore Hungarian and Romanian pseudonyms, eg. Arpad Városz, Gyorgi Vintilescu, Nicu Vladescu. In the 2nd half of the 1920s, he started his own salon orchestra under the name Dajos Béla. Along with those of Paul Godwin, Efim Schachmeister, Julian Fuhs, Marek Weber, his band became one of the most popular in Germany and gained a high reputation abroad. Among many prime musicians who played in his orchestra were the pianist and composer Franz Grothe, composers Wilhelm Grosz and Willy Engel-Berger, the jazz-musician Kurt Hohenberger, the singers Leo Monosson, Kurt Mühlhardt, Rex Allen, Paul O’Montis, fabulous American banjo-player Mike Danzi and accordionist Will Glahé. Dajos Béla’s band played a range of music, but for jazz music often recorded under “American” sounding names, such as The Odeon Five, Mac’s Jazz Orchestra or the Clive Williams Jazzband. As soon as Hitler’s party came to power in Germany in 1933, Béla started touring abroad. He performed in Vienna, Prague, Paris, Amsterdam, London. In 1935 he traveled to Buenos Aires, where he remained for the rest of his life, performing and leading dance bands. However, in the pass of years Dajos Béla's popularity started to wane. In Argentina and in other countries the live music slowly disappeared from the coffee houses. He could still hold a few years with engagements at weddings and on cruise ships afloat, but his Mittel-European genre was more and more loosing its attraction. He was happy, when in 1970 he got the invitation of the Senate of Berlin to come to Germany and receive honors. He died in Louisiana Falda, Argentina, in 1978.
