BBC TV OB - Behind the scenes at The Grand National, 1982

Two sections in this clip - the first one is behind the scenes of an Outside Broadcast, on this occasion at Aintree for the Grand National, April 1982. The cameras used are the Philips LDK 5 (the triax cable version of the LDK 25 which used multi-core cable), and there were approximately 22 of them around the course. They used plumbicon tubes and we see a couple on charts being lined up by engineers in the truck.

The second section in this clip are my colleague cameramen from BBC Manchester trying to repair a car. The guy who says hello to camera is 'Little Mac', Don McKay the Camera Supervisor. He was the original Roving Eye cameraman in 1952 - here:

The guy who does the piece to camera is Barry Wilkinson, who the following year went to Granada TV to cover ENG in the northern area of the north west for them, now retired. Also, Ian Keown, his credit as Camera Supervisor seen regularly now on ITV programmes.

We see engineers too and too many names to mention. Also, an ancient radio van, and lastly, on the way to the pub (The Punchbowl in the small village of Sefton, where still we always go for lunch on non-race days) find that the price of petrol is... How Much a gallon!
