Secrets of Painting Transparent Objects / Painting Tutorial

Painting Transparent objects doesn't have to be a mystery. With a few simple tips you can learn how to see clear objects with new eyes and not only paint their transparency, but their form and reflections as well.

Also, here are some key points from the video:

1. Get an Accurate Sketch: Starting with correct proportions is going to be key in the success of your work with this type of subject matter.
2. Turn Your Brain Off- I know it sounds strange, but try to see the transparent object for only shapes, values and colors. Often we try to paint what we "think" a clear object should look rather than what information is actually there.
3. Paint the inside content first: I typically paint what is INSIDE the vase or glass before adding highlights.
4. Lost Edges: Typically, the sides of glass objects have varying value differences. Often there is not even a visible line distinguishing the glass from the outside area. The illusion of form will come from the overall shape which evolves as we add value changes. Avoid drawing a line for the outside shape during the painting process (although a line for the initial drawing is necessary).
5. Shapes and Values: Keep observing and rendering shapes and values. Often zooming into an area (if you are using a reference photo) will help you to more clearly identify the shapes and values without your brain trying to interpret things incorrectly.
6. Add Highlights Last: As your painting evolves and you achieve correct "contents" within the glass and establish the outer vs. inner edges, it is time to add "form" to the glass itself. This is achieved by adding highlights to the glass that occur when light bounces off of certain areas. Sometimes these highlights are very bright glints of light along the edge or rim of the glass, and sometimes they are vertical strokes of lighter values along the main body of the glass. Also, there is often a highlight at the top of the water surface (if the glass contains liquid). These highlights are like icing on the cake and give the final illusion of a clear glass that has form and substance.
