How A Thought Experiment Made Set Theory Famous

In 1924, David Hilbert was giving a lecture and told a story about a hotel. Not a real hotel — an impossible one. A hotel with infinitely many rooms, numbered 1, 2, 3, and so on forever. Every room is occupied. The hotel is full. A traveler arrives and asks for a room.

In any real hotel, the answer is "sorry, no vacancies." In Hilbert's hotel, the clerk smiles. He asks the guest in room 1 to move to room 2. The guest in room 2 to room 3. Every guest shifts one room over. The traveler checks into room 1.

The hotel was Hilbert's teaching device for Cantor's set theory — a way to make the strangeness of infinite cardinalities concrete and unforgettable.
