A cough is a sudden expulsion of air through the large breathing passages that can help clear them of fluids, irritants, foreign particles, and microbes. As a protective reflex, coughing can be repetitive with the cough reflex following three phases: an inhalation, a forced exhalation against a closed glottis, and a violent release of air from the lungs following opening of the glottis, usually accompanied by a distinctive sound.
A cough can be the result of a respiratory tract infection such as the common cold, acute bronchitis, pneumonia, pertussis, or tuberculosis. In the vast majority of cases, acute coughs i.e. cough shorter than 3 weeks, are due to the common cold. Coughing may be caused by air pollution including tobacco smoke, particulate matter, irritant gases, and dampness in a home.
Expectorant: A medication that helps bring up mucus and other material from the lungs, bronchi, and trachea. An example of an expectorant is guaifenesin, which promotes drainage of mucus from the lungs by thinning the mucus and also lubricates the irritated respiratory tract.
