Pieterpad Days 22 & 23: Are There Wolves? Hiking from Schoonloo to Zuidlaren through Drentsche Aa National Park

Two beautiful days on the Pieterpad, the most famous long-distance trail in the Netherlands!
In Days 22 & 23, I hike from Schoonloo to Zuidlaren (36 km total) — through forests, meadows, and the wide-open landscapes of Drenthe.

On Day 22, the route from Schoonloo to Anderen (16 km) leads through quiet forests, field paths, and past grazing cows. As always, I meet other Pieterpad hikers heading south while I continue northward.

Day 23 takes me from Anderen to Zuidlaren (20 km). Early in the day, I pass through Rolde to visit the prehistoric hunebedden D17 and D18, two of the 52 ancient dolmens found in Drenthe.

From there, the trail enters the beautiful Drentsche Aa National Park — a vast area of heathland, fields, and streams where wolves are known to roam. My dog Frodo stays on the leash as we enjoy the peaceful landscape, once preserved as a military training ground.

In Gasteren, I stop for a warm waffle and tea before continuing along the dune area, which is open to visitors but not accessible for dogs. We follow the path beside it and still get great views over the dunes.

Finally, we reach Zuidlaren, ending two fantastic days of walking. A short bus ride takes me back to my car — and then a long drive home, tired but content.
