3. Walter Segal, by Alice Grahame FOLAR Symposium LANDSCAPE FOR HOUSING Dec 22

Freelance journalist Alice Grahame became interested in the work of the architect Walter Segal, and in his contribution to self-build housing, when she moved into a property in a Segal designed estate in Lewisham. Realising that she had moved into something rather different from run of the mill London housing, she set about researching the estate origins and the career of its designer. She has since co-authored with architectural historian John McKean, ‘Walter Segal, self-built architect’, and an earlier book ‘Walters Way and Segal Close: the Architect Walter Segal and London’s self-build community.’ Although similar in many some ways to the Span estates, the self-build element creates a different and distinctive landscape and architecture.
