The non-profit organization, Ocean Cleanup’s "System 003" is a 2.2 km U-shaped floating barrier towed by two ships, designed to collect plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It funnels waste into a retention zone, a large collection bag monitored by 16 cameras, with an escape hatch for marine life. Once full, the plastic is sorted and recycled. System 03 is the latest step towards the goal of removing 90% of ocean plastic by 2040.
