The Unarmed Medic Who Became WW2’s Most Decorated Hero

In May 1945, on Hacksaw Ridge in Okinawa, US Army medic Desmond Doss stayed behind when everyone else retreated. Alone and unarmed, he lowered 75 wounded men down a cliff — one by one, for twelve hours — whispering the same prayer each time: “Lord, let me get one more.” He became the first conscientious objector in American history to receive the Medal of Honor.

He never carried a rifle. He carried them.
