When Do Most PhDs Quit? Is It Effective To Target Young Scientists As A Way To Motivate PhDs?

I discuss my own experiences about quitting a PhD, and provide some reasons why people quit a PhD.

Many people seem to think that to encourage and grow science, we have to target people in middle school and high school. From my prospective, this is not the correct strategy.

People don’t quit their dreams of being a scientist when they are young, they quit when it gets difficult, which is usually in their senior years of high school, university, or in graduate school.

The reason why we don’t have more engineers, scientists, and PhDs is for many reasons, but I think a big reason is because people quit before they reach their potential:

1.Kids are excited about science! It takes a long time to see the rewards of hard work in academia.
2. The reason more people don’t stay in science is a behavioral problem, not a motivation problem.
3. PhDs quit because they feel alone and afraid in the process, not because they don’t have the right information.
4. People hear about the generic term ‘scientist’, but no one really knows what it is like, and thus they feel strange when they experience it for the first time.
5. The depiction of science is idealistic - it is really about finding an idea that you are curious about and working at it for many years. Doing a PhD can be very boring and emotional, but we have to be upfront.

You can keep going:
1. The rewards of academia do come, but you simply have to be around for them.
2. Keep being optimistic. You can change your niche if you don’t like what you are doing.
3. Take one small step today. You just need to do one small thing and you are on your way.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.

https://r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform

A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.

The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
