I am playing in the key of G major but have my capo on the third fret - (sounding key Bb major).
The original version by Simon and Garfunkel is in key Eb major - 5 frets higher than this.

Strumming pattern:
All downstrokes (I use a thin plectrum)
1 2 3 4
D D dDdDd (repeated)
Count 1: fast down (most dominant to count the beat)
2: slower down emphasising each string / quick touch on the top string (or two).
3: fast down / fast down on top strings
4: same as 3
Count: 1 2 +3+4+1 2 +3+4+ . . . . .

This is the basic strum - maybe a small variation here and there.

Paul Simon wrote the song in the summer of 1969. It is the title song of Simon and Garfunkel's album of the same name. The single was released in January 1970 and was a huge hit around the world, as was the album.
