This is the first song I wrote (1987). It's about my late Grandad, Robert Clayton Tulip. He travelled the world as a mining engineer, and In my early years, as his grandson, he always gave me the impression that he was a rich man. He was a materialistic person. He had to be the first to own the latest thing and let everyone know that he had it. He was the first one in his street (Coquet Street, Jarrow) to have a television. It was a great treat for the family to go round on a Sunday evening to watch 'Whats my line' and 'The Sunday Palladium' in black and white. He was the first in the neighbourhood to own a car (he regularly took us grand kids for rides into the countryside at the weekends). However, when he ended up in an old folks home to spend the last four years of his life - he had no wealth or possessions to talk about - he changed - as probably all do in his circumstances, into someone who now thinks that his relationship with the people who visit him, the fellow home inmates and carers around him are the only things that matter. To him wealth and material things were now of no concern.
I visited him often. On my last visit as I was leaving he grabbed hold of my arm and in an emphasised and focused manner he said: 'Robert, look after yourself’. He had never done anything like this before. He died in his sleep that night. He was 94 when he died.
