FULL INTERVIEW: WSU President Elizabeth Cantwell on disruptions in state and research funding

Washington State University President Elizabeth Cantwell says she arrived in Pullman expecting major turbulence in higher education, but not the scale of disruption she now sees coming from both Olympia and Washington, D.C.

“We have the imperative to change rapidly, and we are in the middle of institutions that operate like museums, like we are curating the past as more important than focusing on the future,” she said, “That is often called a culture change.”

Cantwell, who is the first woman to ever hold the President’s title at WSU, arrived on campus in April and instantly made waves in the rolling hills of the Palouse. She moved the President’s office back the French Administration Building, moved back into the Ida Lou Anderson house, and eliminated the chancellor position, and took a very hands on approach to the Athletic Department.

Cantwell spoke with KOMO News for a wide ranging half hour sit down conversation covering multiple challenges, involving the budget, cutbacks, and the future of the Pac-12.
