Spirituals are a collective, anonymous creation of black slaves in the United States, the result of a meeting between African musical traditions and European Protestant hymns.
Their texts are mainly inspired by the Old Testament, and in particular the Book of Exodus, which recounts the emancipation of the Hebrew people, a biblical reference that carries the hope of American slaves to free themselves from the yoke of their masters.
