Greensleeves is a famous traditional English love song from the 16th century, dating back to the early Renaissance, dedicated to Lady Greensleeves (a “lady with green sleeves”).
British folklore attributes this song to King Henry VIII of England (1491-1547) on the theme of his unrequited love for his second wife and Queen of England, Anne Boleyn (1501 or 1507-1536):
Alas, my love, ye do me wrong
To cast me off discurteously,
And I have loved you so long,
Delighting in your company...
During the Elizabethan reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England, daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, this ballad became widely known and extremely popular. It was initially transmitted mainly through manuscript copies, long before it was first printed in 1580 by the Stationers' Company of London under the title A New Northern Ditty of the Lady Greene Sleeves. No original copies of this first edition have been preserved, and the identity of its true author-composer remains unknown.
Fluid and melancholic, the melody is based on the rhythm of the Sicilian dance and develops from a scale characteristic of ancient modes. The song is based on the passamezzo antico, an obstinate bass line—called ostinato in Italian or ground in English—that is, a progression of chords repeated throughout the piece and conducive to variations.
With its sober expression and noble melody, Greensleeves has established itself as a seminal work in the English musical tradition.
