Sequential Pro 3 - Arpeggiator with Paraphonic Mode, Mod Sequencer

In this tutorial I run through a patch design using the Arpeggiator, Paraphonic Mode and Modulation Sequencer to design some complex arp patterns. I've been spending a lot of time lately on patches like this... working on a full bank of sounds that will be available soon, focused on complex but versatile arps and paraphonic motion patches that can be played in any key.

I've found the best results when just limiting frequency modulation in the sequencer to octaves (+/- 96) and fifths (+/-56), but I'll sometimes integrate a fourth (+/-40) as well... also, I recommend leaving most steps at 0, and just targeting between 2-8 steps (out of 16) to have different frequency modulation. The more frequency steps you integrate, the more complex the melody will be, but its all a balance game if you want to make the patch extremely versatile to be played with more complex chords. If you stick with playing octaves, it will all be perfectly in key, but as you play more complex intervals, the sequencer will occasionally introduce a slightly more dissonant sound... usually from a closely related key signature though, so its often an interesting sound. In the video above, I tried to play a lot of notes in the scales, including 3rds, 2nds, 6ths, etc, so you can hear where they combine with the modulation offsets and sometimes modulate out of key slightly. But yeah, as mentioned, its all a balance game with versatility of the patch, and complexity of melodic/arp pattern.

I've used this type of setup as the basis for around forty or fifty patches I've created over the past few months.... once you get the arp melody variation, you can really go nuts with the other lanes and introduce a lot of other interesting sound design - altering osc shape and shape mod / pwm, osc levels, altering envelope ADR stages per sequence step, filter parameters, effects parameters, feedback, etc... Also, as mentioned in the video, if you set some of the lanes to less than 16 steps, you'll get more interesting poly-rhythms. And if you design separate modulations on each of the four phrases, then you can "phrase juggle" them in real time while you play, or hold a chord, allowing for tons of interesting performance variants.

Also, by changing the Arp Mode (Up, Down, UpDown, Assign, Random), and the Repeats (0,1,2) and Octaves, you can get additional complex variants of melodic sequences. Setting the sequencer to play in Fwd/Rev or Random mode gives additional variants as well.
