Hey guys! Its your good buddy Uncle Ben here with my Christmas gift to you all: a super heavy duty theory-laden lesson full of harmonic trickery!
Have you ever wondered what makes so many of our favorite Christmas songs sound so doggone magical and, well, Christmassy? Well, this year, Uncle Ben Eller here was learning a bunch of new tunes for the holiday season, and i stumbled across something significant: almost ALL of my favorites shared the same amazing chord cadence somewhere in them! A I VI II V I cadence, to be exact. Some of the tunes also dolled it up with more dominant 7 chords in crazy ways for extra cheerful Christmas magic, using a trick that i call the Fourth Fall (which you're gonna know soon, too)!
But what if you don't know what a I VI II V I is? Well don't worry! I'm giving you a super fast crash course on the basics of chord and scale relationships, forming extended chords, and the number system itself, plus the magical realm of altered dominant chords. This is super useful stuff no matter what kind of music you're into and what your experience level is, whether you play guitar or not! You can use these ideas with your piano, bass, or whatever instrument you play. Well, maybe not drums. But you can try it anyway.
But what if you already know what a I VI II V I is? Well, skip the recap and head straight to 5:47 to get into unraveling the secrets of this mystery chord progression!
Examples used:
Sleigh Ride - The Ronettes: I VI II V7 I
Its Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas - Bing Crosby: I VI7 II V7 I
Mele Kalikimaka - Bing Crosby: I VI7 II V7 I plus a cool I7 IV III7 VI7 II7
Have a Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives: V I VI7 II7 V7 I
All I Want for Christmas is You - Mariah Carey: I VI7b9 II V7b9 I

Playing my Suhr Alt T into the incredible Fractal Audio Axe FX III, which is using a Sinmix BassGuyClean patch plus the built-in PlexDelay for some ambient glory in there. And despite what my rosy cheeks may be telling you, i hadn't even gotten into the eggnog yet.
I hope y'all have a great holiday season and can use these secrets to make the next generation of Christmas Classics!
