Extractive Distillation to separate Acetone-Water Mixture in Aspen HYSYS - Lecture # 23

Learn to use extractive distillation column scheme in Aspen HYSYS for the separation of acetone and water mixture, using 3-methylhexane as solvent. The extractive distillation column helps in saving energy, as required during the traditional distillation scheme. Please do watch, like, and share the video, and subscribe the channel "AspenTech Channel".

The problem statement is given below:

A feed mixture consisting of 50 wt. % acetone, and 50 wt. % water is fed to the extractive distillation column at 25 °C and 1 bar, at a flowrate of 100 kg/h. A solvent consisting of 1 mole % 3-methylhexane is fed to the extractive distillation column at 30 °C, and 1 bar, at a flowrate of 150 kg/h.

Pure water is obtained from bottom the tower. This column has 10 stages, with condenser and reboiler pressures as 1 bar. The top product from this column is sent to the 2nd column (solvent recovery column), where further separation takes place, 99 mole% pure acetone is obtained from top (vapor), and solvent is recovered from the bottom. This column has 50 stages, with feed entering at 25th stage. The condenser and reboiler pressures are 1 bar. The reflux ratio of this column is 1.2. The solvent is recycled back to the 1st column using recycle tool, after cooling down to 30 °C and 1 bar.
