Prostitution's History

The earliest recorded evidence of prostitution comes from Sumerian tablets dating back to 2400 BCE, describing temple brothels dedicated to the goddess Ishtar. These brothels were often staffed by priestesses who were believed to possess sacred powers. Sacred prostitution was also practiced in other ancient civilizations, such as Babylon and Egypt. In these cultures, prostitutes were often associated with fertility and were believed to have the power to influence the gods. Prostitution was widespread in ancient Greece and Rome, and was often regulated by the state. Brothels were common, and prostitutes were depicted in art and literature. Greece, there were different classes of prostitutes, ranging from high-class courtesans who provided companionship and intellectual stimulation to lower-class streetwalkers. In Medieval Europe The Catholic Church condemned prostitution as a sin and sought to suppress it. However, prostitution persisted, particularly in urban centers and along trade routes.

The Industrial Revolution led to increased urbanization and poverty, contributing to the growth of prostitution. Brothels became more common in cities, and social reformers sought to address the issue. Wars I and II led to an increase in prostitution due to the presence of large numbers of soldiers. This created a demand for sexual services that was met by both legal and illegal brothels. 20th century, some countries began to legalize or decriminalize prostitution. This approach was often motivated by a desire to regulate the industry and protect the health of prostitutes. The internet and other technological advances have had a profound impact on the prostitution industry, facilitating the spread of online sex work and human trafficking. #facts #history
