Japan's dolphin killing cove | 60 Minutes Australia

A small Japanese coastal town's practice of slaughtering dolphins came to notoriety in 2009 when shocking images of blood-tainted waters surfaced in the Academy Award-winning documentary The Cove.

The gruelling hunt was condemned as devastating animal cruelty, where dolphins are herded to a cove in Taiji and segregated. Some get sold to buyers for entertainment, and those that don't make the cut are butchered for their meat.

Locals argue that these cetaceans are a vital food source that can feed their community for the entire year, and records of this practice can be traced back to the 1600s.

Over a decade since the documentary, dolphin hunting in Taiji is still happening.
