Stan Kenton & his Orchestra - live at Sunnybrook Ballroom in 1962
Stan Kenton & his Orchestra are heard in a live remote broadcast from Sunnybrook Ballroom in Pottstown, Pennsylvania on October 20, 1962 over radio station WRCV, an AM radio station in Philadelphia.
I recorded this on a Pentron reel-to-reel tape recorder, connected to the radio's earphone jack. I missed the very beginning of the program; and, WRCV's announcer, Bill Bransom, misidentifies the first song.
My wife to be and I attended dances at Sunnybrook in the early 1960's and danced to the bands of Les Brown, Count Basie and the Glenn Miller Orchestra under the direction of Ray McKinley. I also recorded a remote broadcast featuring Maynard Ferguson and his Orchestra.
Built in 1931, SunnyBrook Ballroom is one of the few remaining large dance halls of the pre-World War II era still in existence and still operating. It is the 3rd largest Ballroom in the United States and the largest East of the Mississippi. For its first three decades or so, one of the big "name" dance bands played there every Saturday night, New Year's Eve, and sometimes during the week or on other holidays. Located just east of Pottstown, PA, it attracted dancers from a 50-mile radius, and all the Philadelphia Main Line, who came to dance to – or in some cases just listen and watch– virtually all the top dance bands in the country.
