Marcelo Garcia: Hooks & Sit Up Escape vs Side Control
4 Part Lesson -- Marcelo shows contingencies for sweeping from Butterfly Guard: Having a good game relies on the ability to initiate a sequence and apply variations based on what reactions your opponent gives you; if Marcelo attempts a Hooks Sweep from Butterfly and his opponent doesn't lift up easily, Marcelo will quickly make an adjust where he scoots his hips in closer to his hooks before trying to lift again. [02:44] If your opponent folds your legs together with a Smash Pass as you try to lift with your Hooks, bring your knees together so they can't be split readily. Use both of your Butterfly-Hooks to lift up your opponent's leg so you can scoop it up onto your shoulder and transition into an X-Guard for a sweep. [07:05] If your opponent stays heavy and you cannot lift them up for X-Guard to counter the Folding Pass, post your hand behind you while maintaining a Collar-Grip so you can execute a Sit-Up Escape. Scoot away from your opponent using the grip to help keep distance as you reset your knees into Butterfly Guard. [11:00] If your opponent passes your smashed Butterfly-Hooks with the Folding Pass, stay sitting upright with the grip on the collar and use your hooks from the outside to help extend your opponent's nearside leg. Once there is enough space, insert either foot inside as a Butterfly or Reverse Butterfly-Hook so you may recovery back your full guard.
