Many years ago, I promised my herd elder that I would help him transition to his next command when the time came, if he needed my help. That dreaded time came this past January, as he entered into his 32nd year of life. I knew it was coming, but of course I was not prepared. No one ever is. What I could not have foreseen, however, was the unforgettable journey Shoki led me on in his final weeks. Or the heartbreakingly tender ways our herd taught me what it means to hold space for what is, and the power of grieving communally. Together the horses and I leaned into the wisdom of the natural world where I learned that if we can stay present, death becomes an existential experience full of life-affirming moments, other-worldly mysteries, remarkable transformations, rebirth and possibility.
