Many patients call the granulation tissue toe meat and when the nail is severely ingrown the toe meat hangs over the sides of the toenails and hurts.The sides of the ingrown nail can be removed permanently so they will never grow again by adding a chemical called sodium hydroxide or phenol to kill the nail cells also known as the nail matrix. This procedure is called a matrixectomy or matricectomy which is performed for painful ingrown toenails. An antibiotic is given for a toe infection which looks like red skin around the toe and it looks like a big red toe with sometimes pus around the side or pus under the toenail.
