Howard League Spotlights: Persistence of Victorian Prisons

In England and Wales today, more than a quarter of people in prison live in Victorian-era accommodation. Since most Victorian prisons are ‘locals’, serving the courts and holding people awaiting trial or sentence, almost all men in prison will have spent time in one at some point.

What is it like to live and work in Victorian prisons? How have they changed over time? Why do we still have them? And what does that say about today’s prison system? These are just some of the questions discussed at this event – the first in a new series called ‘Howard League Spotlights’.

In this event recording you will hear about ‘The Persistence of the Victorian Prison’, a research project that explores the implications of the continued operation of Victorian-era prisons and asks how we will know when they have reached the end of their operational lives. Ian Blakeman, Governor at Pentonville prison will share his experience of working in a Victorian prison, and Lee will share his insights from living inside a Victorian prison.
