Yesterday, the White House announced that they will begin to ship COVID-19 vaccines directly to U.S. pharmacies. This is the latest move by the Biden administration to speed up the vaccination distribution process and expand the pool of people able to get the shots. Starting February 11, the administration will send up to 1 million vaccines per week to 6,500 pharmacy retailers across the country with hopes to expand the number of receiving pharmacies to 40,000 in the near future. This will be in addition to the millions of doses being sent directly to states and territories. Those eligible to receive the vaccine vary from state to state. Health care workers and nursing home residents remain the top priority, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has left the final decision up to individual state governments. A new survey from The New York Times found that nearly half of all states are now allowing teachers to receive COVID-19 vaccines, as in-person learning is ramping up again, while Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said that restaurant workers and taxi drivers in New York state will also be allowed to get the vaccine.
