Bazar de Gozar is the legendary marketing mascot created by NEC in November 1991 to humanize their dominant but technical PC-98 computer lineup. This charming little monkey, often seen dressed in traditional Japanese attire, was the brainchild of creative director Masahiko Sato, who aimed to make complex computing feel accessible and "kawaii" to the general public. The name is a brilliant linguistic fusion, blending the French-inspired "Bazaar" for a touch of European chic with the archaic Japanese verbal suffix "gozaru" used by ancient samurais. Throughout the 1990s, the character appeared in minimalist TV commercials with absurd humor and a distinctive voice provided by Ryusei Nakao. Beyond television, NEC used the mascot to flood the market with high-quality promotional goods like calendars, clocks, and stationery during their "Winter" and "Summer" campaigns. Even decades later, Bazar de Gozar remains a powerful symbol of Japan’s Post-Bubble tech culture and a nostalgic icon for retro-computing enthusiasts worldwide.
