My Used BMW i3 - 10 Things I Hate About This Car

BMW i3 - 10 things I hate
This is a used 2015 BMW i3 Fully Loaded that I purchased for 80% off the MSRP while was over $50K. This is my first EV car and I am quickly falling in love with how it drives and the fact that I don’t have to put gas anymore. However, there are 10 things that I find notably annoying / Hate. However, I probably would still have bought this car even if I Knew these beforehand. Without further a due, here are 10 things I hate about this car.

1. Range Anxiety: The BMW i3 base that I got do not come with a Range Extender. I drive approximately 20 miles round trip so it is more than what I need for my daily commute. However, I just feel very limited from time to time. I just hate the fact that I am going to have to find a place to plug in this car everywhere I go just to make sure I have enough juice in reserve in case I have some unexpected places that I have to be at. Also it is so fun to drive, and be in and the fact that I am limited to just 72 miles on range just kind of suck.
2. 20” wheel rides very harsh: There are 2 different wheel sizes: 19” and 20”. I really wish I would have chosen the 19” because the 20” just feels really harsh. Although it does look nicer than the 20” however, you can feel almost every part of the road. While on the freeway, you can really feel it if you go through a pothole
3. Comfort mode is fun to drive but drain battery like crazy. There are 3 different drive mode, Comfort, Comfort Pro, and Comfort Pro +. When you first start up the car, it defaults to comfort mode, which is nice because in the mode, the car feels like a sport car - allowing you to accelerate from 0 - 60 in 7 Seconds, but the reality is because of the instantaneous torque, it feels like its a 4 second car and It does through you back in your seat. The downside is which already a limited range of 72 miles, comfort mode is going to really limit your range a lot more. On a few tests runs in comfort mode, I average around 55-60 miles per charge.
4. Safety - European Crash test Agency rated this car as a 4 Star out of 5 in terms of safety and how it protects occupants during a crash test. Most cars now a day earned a 5/5 so I am a little worry just in case some bad do happen. The good news is that even though this car is small, I feel extremely safe when I am inside this car and it feels rather large. I can’t say the same when I am in a Honda Civic or a Toyota Corolla.
5. No memory seats. Advertised and sold as a luxury Electric Car, I would expect this item to be in the car. Most Modern Fully loaded BMWs have this feature. It is just very convenience when there’s more than one driver, which I do have in my household. I am a bit disappointed but I do understand their reasoning - weight saving translates to more range out of the battery.
6. Safe belt loop - Ah, this is one of those things that really bother me in terms of cosmetic, The driver safety belt has a loop to help drivers reach the seat belt buckle easier. However, it looks very ugly in my opinion. I am sure there’s other material or object that they can use to achieve the same functionality.
7. Blind spot detection - If safety is at the forefront on new cars, BSD is a MUST. I am sadden that even when this is equipped with the latest safety technology such as back up camera and frontal crash test presentation, the basic and most important safety feature - the BSD is not present in this car or in the newest model year. What would make this car safer would be to add the BSD and 360 cameras.

8.5 seater - I know I am being picky here, but I would have been nice to be able to squeeze in a 5th person. I think that would have really sweeten the deal for me. I travel with two kids from time to time and there are times that my wife wants to sit in the back with the kids. Believe it or not but this car is actually roomy enough for me to squeeze two kids in the back.

9 Tires worn out too quick - These 20” skinny tires are not that cheap. They are expensively made by Bridgestone tires and they are not cheap. Most BMW i3 owners reported that they would need to replace these tires between 15-20K. This translates to about 1-2 years off ownership. With 4 tires, the price with installation is roughly $800 - 10000 depending on where you go. This is just another fact to think about if you want to get a BMW i3

10. I know that the 2018 model now has a dual moonroof. I would just wish that they had it in the 2015 model, Also the front trunk is way to small to actually put anything. It would have been nice, if they somehow made it bigger like the Tesla model 3 so that we can have more space for our stuff.

Although these are the items that bother me, I would have still bought this car because it SO fun to drive and futuristic. The only thing I would change is get the i3 with the Range extender.
