For 27 years, photographer Deanna Dikeman quietly documented a simple family ritual: her parents standing in their driveway in Sioux City, Iowa, and waving as she drove away after each visit. What began in 1991 as a spontaneous snapshot from her car window grew into the moving photo series and book, "Leaving and Waving." The project shows the passage of time through one repeated, ordinary moment.

It begins with black and white photos that capture the early years of the ritual. Around 2009, the images shift to color, a turning point for the family, adding a sense of warmth and reality just as the story becomes more emotional.
