Cow Pasture Apiary

POV while preparing additional hive stands for future splits.

I’m showing the stand and mat setup that will support several new colonies this season.

While removing the last remaining jar feeder, I also demonstrate how I plan to use homemade entrance reducers in combination with jar feeders to help reduce robbing pressure.

During the inspection I discovered a dead-out colony.

The cluster appears to have starved and frozen in place, which can sometimes happen late in winter when bees are unable to move to nearby resources during cold snaps.

This hive had received a full Norroa treatment dose a few weeks earlier, so the loss may have been related to other factors. This colony was also one of the hives that had previously been knocked over by cattle, and it’s possible the queen may have been lost earlier in the season.

Beekeeping always involves learning from both the successes and the losses.

“It’s honey with a J, and a Jeff with one F between two E’s.
That’s Honey Boss.
And this is my office.”
