“Faith Journeys with God in the Land” - Part 27

This episode (Part 26) was recorded at Gamla in the Golan Heights

Gamla is called the “Masada of the North” today because of the role this Jewish city played in the 1st Revolt against the Romans. In 66-67 AD, the residents of Gamla battled the Romans in what would be the first significant battle in the war. Gamla and its thousands of residents (according to Josephus, although he is know to exaggerate numbers) fell to the Romans in a fierce battle here. The size and shape of Gamla made the city highly defensible, however the Romans and their strength were too much.

It is my suggestion that prior to the 1st Revolt, Jesus taught in Jewish cities like this. After all, archaeologists have discovered a 1st century synagogue here, one of only seven or eight discovered so far that date from this time period. Even though Gamla is six miles east of the northern tip of the Sea of Galilee, there is a good probability that Jesus spoke in this one.

Jesus was unique from other 1st century Messianic figures since Jesus focused on bringing about a spiritual kingdom and not a political one. Jesus taught in synagogues all over the Galilee teaching specifically about the “reign and rule of God.” He taught His disciples to “seek first the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33), for the kingdom was Jesus’ go-to message.

In our walk of faith, we are called to live out the “reign and rule” of God in and through our lives. Our encouragement in living out the kingdom is that we don’t do this in and of our own strength. Jesus dwelling within us through His Spirit is what inspires us to live out the kingdom! So be encouraged to live out the kingdom of God in your life today!
