Race for Stalingrad - Furthest German Advance of the War

The furthest point the Panzers got into Russia was achieved on August 23, 1942. The failure of Operation Barbarossa, Germany's conquest of the Soviet Union in 1941, resulted in a significant shift in Hitler's military strategy. Realising that Germany was now engaged in a war of attrition and had nearly depleted its oil reserves, Hitler recognised that he could not sustain a prolonged offensive with his dwindling supplies. As a result, in the summer of 1942, Hitler launched a new operation to secure the vital oil fields of the Caucasus region. This operation was vital because it aimed to replenish Germany's critically low fuel reserves while economically crippling the Soviet Union due to its reliance on 90% of its oil reserves from the region.
