The History of Holland – From a County to the Leader of the Dutch Republic

Learn more about the history of Holland. Why are the Netherlands called Holland? The County of Holland developed in such a way that it would become the leading province of the Dutch Republic. Did you know that in the Late Middle Ages Holland's economic position was far from ideal. There was count Floris V who fought against the Frisians in the Friso-Hollandic Wars. The history of the Netherlands during the Middle Ages is very determinative for the Dutch. During the Middle Ages Dutch merchants sailed across the seas to trade. It brought Holland a lot of wealth. For example the Baltic trade where the Dutch imported cheap grain. This trade was named maternal grace (moedernegotie). Eventually the Low Countries came under Spanish control. Due to the Reformation and several other factors the Eighty Years' War started were the Dutch were led by William of Orange (Willem van Oranje) and assisted by the Sea Beggars (Watergeuzen) to fight off the Spanish. In 1588 the Dutch Republic (Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden) was established. Here Holland led the States General (Staten Generaal) in a complicated web of different types of rulers. There were the Regents (regenten), Stadtholders (stadhouders) and the Grand pensionary (raadpensionaris) were Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and Johan de Witt were the most famous of. The Dutch Republic and also the County of Holland would find their demise after the Batavian Revolution (1795).
