Battle Over Historic Weems-Botts House in Dumfries | Town, Nonprofit Clash Over Control
Fireworks are brewing over one of Virginia’s oldest homes — the Weems-Botts House — as the Town of Dumfries and the nonprofit Historic Dumfries Virginia, Inc. (HDVI) face off over who should run this centuries-old landmark and nearby Merchant Park.
The Weems-Botts House dates to the 1700s, once home to Reverend Mason Locke Weems, George Washington’s first biographer and the man who wrote the famous cherry tree story. Later, Benjamin Botts, Aaron Burr’s defense lawyer in the 1807 treason trial, owned the house.
In this Potomac Local News report, Uriah Kiser explains:
Why Dumfries leaders say the 1998 operating agreement with HDVI may be invalid
Why Historic Dumfries insists the 40-year deal remains binding through 2038
What’s at stake for one of Virginia’s oldest towns and its most recognizable landmark
How the Weems-Botts Museum fits into Dumfries’ 275-year history — and even a few local ghost stories
🏛️ About the Weems-Botts House:
Built in the 18th century, the house reflects early Tidewater Virginia architecture and stands as a living link to America’s founding era.
🎃 Bonus: It’s also said to be haunted — just in time for Halloween.
📅 Meeting Tonight:
The Dumfries Town Council and Historic Dumfries will hold a public work session Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025, at 7 p.m. to discuss the transition.
