Best TMPE rules for Roundabouts in Cities Skylines
In this video I test 6 different combinations of TMPE (using STOP, YIELD and Occupy) rules to find the best settings for a busy Roundabout. I test using the built-in Large roundabout (which uses 6-lane city roads approaching a 3-lane round highway road for the Roundabout itself) and very heavy traffic conditions. I used the same starting conditions for each run of the test and used a little mod I wrote which counts vehicle numbers over time. To come up with the results I ran each test for exactly 10 minutes and counted how many vehicles were able to exit the roundabout in that time.
Note 1: When I say that I allow the occupy rule, I mean that I only allow the vehicles currently on the roundabout to enter an occupied junction, I do not apply this rule to the vehicles on the feeder roads.
Note 2: The results of this test will only apply under similar Very-Heavy-Traffic conditions, using these settings under light traffic conditions could result in worse traffic flow than other rule-combinations.
Note 3: You don't necessarily need the TM:PE mod to apply some of these rules, the Mass Transit DLC lets you change traffic lights to STOP signs and designate main roads.
The conventional wisdom is that vehicles entering the roundabout should Yield to traffic on the roundabout, and that vehicles on the roundabout should be permitted to enter blocked junctions. Is this actually the best way to set up a busy roundabout?
In case anyone was wondering about the TMPE settings I used to come up with the results, I used the default settings, but with a few changes to try to improve the simulation accuracy, in particular, I used:
Gameplay Settings:
Simulation accuracy: Very High
Reckless drivers Percentage: 2%
Individual driving Styles: On
Disable despawning: On
Enable Advanced Vehicle AI: On
Dynamic Lane selection: 30%
Policies:
At Junctions: All off
On Roads: Vehicle restrictions aggression: Medium
