Analyzing the Double-T Junction and Double-T Grid
In this video I analyze the performance of various city traffic grids and see how they compare to the Double-T Grid. I start out by looking at the basic differences between the Double-T Junction and conventional 1-Way and 2-Way traffic intersections. Then I use a simplified deterministic model of a city to explore how long it would take drivers to navigate a city with a Double-T Grid and compare that with conventional grids. I found that even though vehicles in the deterministic single-vehicle model cannot take advantage of the improved throughput of the Double-T Junction, it still makes possible faster cross-city travel than in conventional city grids.
Making this video (specifically the idealized city simulator) was pivotal for me, I hadn't fully understood the implications of the behaviour of the traffic lights in a Double-T Grid before I'd seen the simulator running. Afterwards though I began to realise that instead of being just an intersection curiosity that might look good in a city simulator or in isolated instances in a real city, it has the potential to substantially improve real-world traffic flow on a large scale.
