STORYLINE:
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad arrived in Argentina on Friday for a one-day official visit to the country, and met President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner at the presidential palace, the Casa Rosada.
After a formal welcome ceremony, the two leaders held a private meeting.
Syrian relations with Argentina are complicated by the fact that Argentina is seeking the arrest of several top officials of Iran on charges of masterminding the 1994 bombing of a Jewish cultural centre in Argentina.
Iran is a close Syrian ally.
Al-Assad and Fernandez were signing accords on Friday on transportation, information and culture.
Last year's bilateral trade amounted to 380 million US dollars.
Al-Assad arrived in Buenos Aires after having visited Cuba, Venezuela and Brazil, on a tour aimed at strengthening cooperation and trade.
It was the first visit by the Syrian president to the region.
