NIGHT PAINTING in WATERCOLOR - Step by Step Tutorial by Tim Wilmot
How to paint a night scene in watercolor? To be honest in 50 years of painting watercolour I have only ever painted two night scenes. One was in 2013 the other was in 2017. After the 2017 one I said to myself never again, but I'm bowing to pressure here after several requests, and here is my third attempt. What mistakes will I make? How will I do things differently on the next night painting?

The subject location is Nardo, in the Puglia region of Italy. A pretty square in the evening. Source image for this painting courtesy of:

At the start of this video, I show my source photograph for the painting. If you want to keep referring to this during the video, then copy the URL of the video into another browser Tab or Window on your device. Run the video again, but of course pause it at the start where I show the source photo. In Chrome, you can also right-click on the tab and select ‘Duplicate’.

In this demo I will be covering...
1) Choice of Subject. What makes a good watercolor subject. How to simplify the scene.
2) Materials I use such as the paper. I will also cover the paints I use and the palette, plus how I hold the different brushes for different techniques.
3) Doing the outline sketch as the first step. How to draw simple figures.
4) Doing the sky and the first wash of the background and then the foreground. My technique for handling lights in the night scene.
5) Shadows and details of the figures buildings.
6) Watch out for the end summary. How did I do?
