Make a mistake? Paint the SAME scene AGAIN. Tips on how to avoid overworking your watercolors

How do you prevent muddy watercolors? How do you stop overworking a painting? How do you know when a painting is finished?

There's 2 paintings in this watercolor tutorial! The first painting gets seriously overworked. I wait 24 hours, then paint the same scene again, trying to learn from my mistakes. During the process I discuss:

- Why it's important to stick to your plan and outline sketch
- What causes a muddy watercolor
- Why using too much white paint is a bad idea
- Lifting out, just at the right time
- Composition
- Know when to stop painting to keep it loose and fresh

...And sometimes it IS a good idea to paint the same scene twice!

Scene is the Ibn Khaldoon mosque in Alexandria, Egypt.

At the start of this video, I show my source photograph for the painting. If you want to keep referring to this during the video, then copy the URL of the video into another browser Tab or Window on your device. Run the video again, but of course pause it at the start where I show the source photo. In Chrome, you can also right-click on the tab and select ‘Duplicate’.
