Philosophic Dialogues from la Frontera 29: Religion

Dr. Paul R. Shockley, a first-generation student, received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Texas A&M University. Affectionately known as “Doc Shock,” Paul specializes in aesthetics, the history of philosophy, ethics, and religious studies. Paul received his BA in History at Stephen F. Austin State University; Th.M from Dallas Theological Seminary; MA-Humanities in the History of Ideas at The University of Texas-Dallas. Using a multidisciplinary approach, he studies the transactional experiences between theology, the arts, religious contexts, and sociological constructions therein. He is a lecturer of philosophy and ethics at Stephen F. Austin State University, and last year Paul was awarded SFA's University Teaching Excellence Award by the Faculty Senate. He is also a lecturer in Religious Studies at The University of Miami where he teaches courses such as Religion and Evil.

His published books include Evangelical America: An Encyclopedia of Contemporary Religious Culture, Worship as Experience: An Inquiry into John Dewey’s Aesthetics, the Community, and the Local Church, and Thinking with Excellence: Navigating the College Experience and Beyond. Paul has lectured in places like Ghana, Indonesia, Liberia, and Scotland, and he frequently leads varied tours to Israel and Jordan, exploring their archeological, cultural, geographical, historical, and religious sites. Paul is an avid student with a wide array of interests including art history, beekeeping, flash fiction literature, gardening, restoring Victorian homes, sociological theory, and all things related to C S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.
