Olliver Duckett from Above - Why Is This Castle-Like Folly Sitting Here?

An aerial look at Olliver Duckett, one of the strangest and most memorable landmarks above Richmond.

At first glance it looks like part of a ruined castle, but there is no castle. Olliver Duckett is actually a mid-18th century folly, built as an eyecatcher for the Aske estate and designed to add theatre and curiosity to the landscape.

That is what makes it so good from above. Sat out on its own with the Swale valley and Richmond around it, it still asks the same questions now as it was meant to ask when it was built - what is it, why is it here, and why does one odd little building have so much presence?
