For Black History Month, I'm sharing a duet from the forthcoming Homegrown Soul ft. Tonina. Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" is both beautiful and powerful. With everything going on, the soul of this song that was written so long ago still resonates in our society today. To perform it in that space, at Earthdance Farm, was the perfect setting for song such as this.

This duet is from a content series called Homegrown Soul. The arts community has been hit hard by COVID-19 and its resulting health and safety restrictions. Venues are closed, artists unable to perform and stage professionals, producers, and agents are unable to earn a living. The Homegrown Soul initiative - spearheaded by Brian Owens and Shelley Dotson (Hurley Creative Consulting) - was created with the aim to give artists a platform to perform, venues unique content to share with their patrons, and patrons the opportunity to support the artists and venues they love. Tonina is a singer, songwriter, bassist, music journalist and poet from St. Louis, Missouri who performs her original music along with her arrangements of covers in both Spanish and English. Tonina comes from a family of music lovers that exposed her to many music styles, from funk, soul, and jazz to classical music.

"Strange Fruit" is a song written by Abel Meeropol, recorded by Billie Holiday in 1939, while the poem the lyrics were drawn from was published in 1937. It protests the lynching of Black Americans, with lyrics that compare the victims to the fruit of trees. Such lynchings had reached a peak in the Southern United States at the turn of the 20th century.
